Ed Praybe, MFA 2012, visited last week to present to the community about his travels in Europe. Ed travelled throughout Europe after receiving the prestigious Hohenberg award, notably visiting Italy, The Netherlands, and Great Britain. Ed showed slides and spoke about the importance of seeing influential masterworks in person, such as Caravaggio’s St. Matthew cycle in Rome, Lorenzetti’s Allegory of Good and Bad Government, and landscapes by Turner and Constable. Ed showed slides of his sketchbook pages, careful investigations of the structural qualities of these important works. In conjunction with the presentation, Ed mounted an exhibition of oil paintings and framed drawings in the downstairs lobby and alcove; paintings that captured the spirit of suburbia as well as faithful drawings from his travels.
This week, the new Hohenberg entries are on display in the student gallery. Each student submits one piece, along with a statement, to the jury of faculty judges. See all of the works in the gallery above- and best of luck to the entrants.
Recent graduate Eleanor Ray is exhibiting paintings in two upcoming shows. She is featured in a three person show at 308 at 156 Project Art Space at 156 Fifth Avenue titled Traces of Omnipresence. Opening reception February 6th from 7-9 PM. You can find a press release and more information HERE.
Also, Eleanor will be featured at Steven Harvey Art Fine Art Projects at 208 Forsyth Street in the Lower East Side beginning on February 13th, concurrent with the gallery’s show of paintings by Julian Bell. The show runs through March 17th. Opening reception Wednesday, February 13th, 6-8 pm.
Each year, one graduating MFA student receives the Hohenberg Travel Scholarship, an award that enables that artist to create their own itinerary for European travel. Edmond Praybe, MFA 2012, received the award and spent part of the summer in London, Amsterdam, and other European locales to further his own studio practice.
After their travels, students return to the New York Studio School to mount an exhibition of recent work, as well as to give an artist talk to the school community. Information for the exhibition is below- and attached are a preview of the drawings and paintings hung in the lobby. Join us on Friday to celebrate Ed’s new body of work, a series of structural and bold paintings and drawings that explore suburban life.
